El Morro, Parte 3

Otra hermosa atracción del paseo del Morro, es su comunidad de gatos, estos gatos han sido rescatados de personas que los han lastimado o simplemente personas sin corazón que los han abandonado, esta comunidad es una de las 5 más importantes de San Juan. Una organización llamada "Save a gato" se ha encargado de alimentarlos, cuidarlos, darles atención médica, y cubrir sus necesidades escenciales por ello está prohibido que la gente les de cualquier tipo de comida o bebida; Lo que sí se puede hacer es acercarse a acariciarlos, muchos de ellos son muy sociales y dóciles, solo basta con hablarles e inmediatamente se acercan a saludarte y están dispuestos a acompañarte un rato mientras caminas. Los puedes ver acostados entre las plantas descansando o sobre las rocas en la orilla del mar. Esta organización de ayuda a los gatos consigue fondos de lo que dona la gente y algunos fondos del gobierno.

Another beautiful attraction at the Paseo del Morro is its cats, these beautiful kitties have been rescued from cruel owners or like others that heartless people just abandoned them there. This community is one of the 5 most important in San Juan. There's a non-profit organization called "Save a gato" who takes care of these cats, they see that they are well fed, healthy, they attend all the cats necessities, for that reason it is prohibited to feed or give any liquids to the cats; But you are allowed to pet them, a lot of them are very social and friendly and are willing to walk beside you for a while and keep you company. You can see them resting under the plants or laying in the rocks by the sea.

Y como siempre compré un libro sobre el lugar, la tienda de El Morro tiene muy buena selección de libros muy diversos, hay de todos los precios y para todos los gustos, en Inglés y en Español. En esta ocasión el libro que compré es la historia del viejo San Juan, está bastante bien explicado, fácil de leer y no muy caro, muy recomendable.

And as usual I bought a book about the place, the store inside El Morro is great, they have a pretty good selection of books, different sizes, prices and types in English and Spanish. This time I bought a book about Old San Juan's history, is very well explained, very easy to read and not to expensive, I recommend it.

El Morro, Parte 2

El paseo de El Morro. Esta vía antes se utilizaba para darle mantenimiento a la pared que rodea la ciudad. En la actualidad es un atractivo más que tiene El Morro, es un paseo de 1,170 metros de largo y una caminata muy agradable, es conveniente llevar puestos zapatos cómodos porque el trayecto es extenso, empieza en la puerta de San Juan y termina en el fuerte y ya sea que entres a recorrer el fuerte o regreses por el mismo camino, cualquiera de las 2 opciones es bastante buena; Algo importante es que no pierdas la oportunidad de ver el atardecer en ese lugar, es un espectáculo muy hermoso. También mientras recorres el camino podrás ver algunos animales del lado del agua, como estrellas de mar, diferentes tipos de peces de colores, cangrejos trepando por las piedras o iguanas tomando el sol en las paredes de la muralla, y por supuesto muchas especies de aves.

Paseo del Morro, is a very nice and relaxing walkway. previously this trail was used as a maintenance road of the city walls and is an attraction you can't miss. Is 0.73 miles long, It starts on San Juan gate and goes all the way until  to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, right now the trail is under more renovations to continue the trail to Castillo San Cristóbal which is near and part of the national park. So, put on some very comfy shoes and enjoy the scenery where you can see a starfish just lying in a rock, several colorful fish, crabs running under the water or among the rocks or, if you turn your head to the walls and look closely you can see gorgeous iguanas climbing or just taking the sun, and of course don't forget to catch the sunset there, is a breathtaking view.

El Morro. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Parte 1

El Morro es un fuerte estilo Medieval que se encuentra en la hermosa ciudad de San Juan, en Puerto Rico. Su nombre completo es: Castillo San Felipe del Morro (pero para los cuates es El Morro) fué construído en el siglo XVI por los españoles para vigilar la bahía de San Juan. Morro significa: monte o peñasco escarpado que sirve de marca a los navegantes en la costa. Declarado Patrimonio de la humanidad (Con justa razón) por Naciones Unidas en 1983.
En su historia, este fuerte ha sido objeto de muchos ataques de diferentes países, el último ataque que sufrió fué en 1898, lo bombardeó fuertemente 3 veces Estados Unidos en la guerra Española-Americana, el ataque mas fuerte fue en Mayo 12 del mismo año resultando que Estados Unidos ganara la guerra, que España firmara el tratado de París y le cediera Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam y Filipinas. A partir de entonces el fuerte sirve para varios propósitos, hasta que en el año 1961 el ejército de Estados Unidos abandona el fuerte, se convierte en parque nacional y es restaurado para abrirlo al turismo.

El Morro is a Medieval fort located in the beautiful city of San Juan, in Puerto Rico. The real name is: Castillo San Felipe del Morro (but El Morro for the pals) it was built by the Spaniards on the 16th century to guard San Juan's bay. Was declared  World Heritage in 1983 by the United Nations.
The word Morro means: Mount or steep pinnacle that functions as a mark for navigators in the coast.
Through the history the fort has been target of numerous attacks from different countries, the last one was on 1898, was 3 times heavily bombarded by the United States navy on the Spanish-American war, but the most severe attack was on May of the same year, and as a result United States won the war making Spain to sign the Paris treaty and ceded ownership of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam and the Philippines to US. Then, the fort was used for several purposes until 1961 when the US army left the fort and the government decided to make it a national park, restored it and open for tourism.

Hay que tomar en cuenta que si se visita este lugar hay que caminar muchísimo, puedes recorrer el camino desde la calle hasta la entrada del fuerte a pie, o bien hay un tipo trenesito que se va deteniendo en los diferentes puntos turísticos de San Juan e incluye tambien el Morro, por supuesto, (de hecho llega hasta la entrada del fuerte) pero una vez dentro del fuerte también se camina bastante, hay que subir y bajar muchas escaleras y rampas empinadas. Otra cosa a tener en cuenta es que el trenesito tiene un horario y el último parte desde la entrada de El Morro como 10 minutos antes de que cierre este.
Una vez dentro del fuerte te olvidas del mundo exterior y te sientes como si estuvieras en una película, cuando ves hacia el mar desde alguna de sus altas paredes juras que en cualquier momento vas a divisar algún barco pirata o al Kraken saliendo del agua, ni hablar del paisaje desde lo alto de El Morro hacia la ciudad de San Juan, es espectacular!
Cuando visitas la parte subterránea del fuerte es fácil imaginarse a los soldados corriendo para ir por más provisones o armamento, en fin, es un lugar maravilloso que tiene mucha historia y se siente increíble caminar por sus pasillos, sus cuartos y sus túneles.
Soy una persona que me encanta andar rancheando, tomando miles de fotografías y visitar un lugar con calma, sin prisas, asi que si eres como yo, te recomiendo que le dediques 2 días a esta parte de El Morro. 

If you visit this place keep in mind there's a lot of walking involved, if it's no problem for you, you can walk all the road to the main entrance, or if that's a problem, there's like a small train which visits all the touristic attractions in San Juan including El Morro (actually, one of the stops is on the main entrance, that way you don't have to walk the entire road to get there) but once inside the fort you have to walk too, lots of stairs and steep ramps (although there's plenty of places to sit in case you get tire) Also keep in mind that the train runs a schedule and the last one departs from the main entrance 10 minutes before closing time.
Once inside the fort, you forget about the world outside and travel back in time or you feel like inside a movie, when you see the ocean from one of the tall walls you swear you will see a pirate ship or the Kraken emerging from the water, or you turn your head to the other side and see the breathtaking landscape of the city of San Juan.
Then you go to the underground area and while you're going down by the stone spiral stairs or the magnificent tunnels is easy to imagine the soldiers running beside you to get supplies or more guns.
This place is magical and it feels amazing to walk through the rooms, tunnels and hallways.
I'm the kind of person who loves to take thousands of pictures, when I visit a place I always try to take my time, it's like I'm the last person on the place when they close and they have to ask me to leave, lol. So, if you are the same kind of person as me, I recommend you to visit this place twice, or at least this part of El Morro
