La Torre de Londres

Este lugar increíble es un complejo de edificios estilo medieval llamado La Torre de Londres. La construcción empezó con Guillermo el Conquistador allá por el año 1066 una de sus funciones era proteger a los ciudadanos de posibles ataques invasores y también servía de Palacio Real.
Está ubicado en el centro de Londres en el distrito Tower Hamlets a un lado del río Támesis. Si vas de visita a Londres puedes llegar a la torre en taxi (Si no te importa gastar más) también en autobús común, que es muy barato y pasa por muchos lugares turísticos, o puedes comprar un boleto para conocer la ciudad en un autobús turístico, que como en muchas ciudades del mundo, tienen rutas que recorren todos los lugares de interés mientras te explican datos curiosos y se va parando en casi todos los puntos, otra opción es el tube también conocido como underground, (el metro) la estación Tower Hill está a sólo 5 minutos (a pie) de la Torre de Londres hay muchos señalamientos, así que no puedes perderte.

This amazing place is a complex of several buildings in medieval style called "The tower of London" its construction began with William the conqueror back in 1066 as part of the Norman conquest, to protect the city from possible invaders and also as the Royal palace.  
It is located in Tower Hamlets district beside the Thames river, in central London.
If you visit London is very easy to get there, by cab (if you don't mind to spend more) by regular bus, which is very inexpensive, or by a touristic bus, you pay for a day or more and you can go off and on any stop you want, while you ride it the tourist guide tells lots of interesting stories about the city. Another option is the tube better known as the underground (the subway) Tower Hill station is only a 5 minutes walking distance from the Tower of London and there are clear signs on how to get to the tower, so there's no way you can get lost.

Siguiendo con la historia: La torre ha pasado por diferentes etapas durante su historia y ha tenido muchos usos, ha servido como fortaleza de reyes, prisión, lugar de ejecuciones, de torturas (por estas razones mucha gente cree que se aparecen algunos fantasmas famosos y otros no tan famosos) y por algún tiempo albergó animales salvajes como leones, elefantes, jirafas y hasta un oso polar.

Going back to the history, the tower's been having several uses through the years such as fortress for kings, prison, execution site, torture chamber (these are the reasons people believe there are famous and not so famous ghosts hunting the place) and for some time was the home of exotic animals like lions, elephants, giraffes and even a polar bear.

La torre es custodiada por los alabarderos llamados Yeomen (Son guardias de su majestad) o como les dice comunmente la gente: Beefeaters, su trabajo principal era la de vigilar a los presos de las mazmorras, actualmente cuidan la torre de los turistas necios y vigilan que nadie se robe las joyas de la corona (que se encuentran en otro de los edificios), muy seguido también es la de tomarse fotos con los turistas, porque hasta ellos mismos se convirtieron en una atracción turística ah! y también son guías de turistas. La verdadera explicación de porqué se les dice Beefeaters ya no se sabe pero una de las teorías que tiene más peso es la de que por allá de los 1800's la reina les pagaba su salario en pedazos de carne y de ahí el nombre. Uno de estos guardias tiene el título de Ravenmaster (algo así como señor de los cuervos) y se dedica precisamente a cuidar de los cuervos que hay en la torre; Una leyenda cuenta que debe haber siempre cuervos viviendo en la torre, y que el día que mueran todos los cuervos de la torre esta caerá junto con toda Inglaterra y su monarquía, (el rey Carlos II fué el que ordenó que siempre hubiera 6 cuervos y un séptimo de reserva) así que por esa razón hay un guardia que se dedica exclusivamente a cuidar a estos hermosos animales a los cuales, para que no se vayan les recortan las puntas de las plumas de las alas, según dicen que a los animalitos no les duele.

The tower is guarded by the Yeomen Warders (guards of the majesty) or commonly called: Beefeaters, in the beginning, their job was to watch the dungeons prisoners, now their job is to guard the tower from misbehaved tourists and also they watch the crown jewels (which are in another building) frequently you see them posing for pictures because they became a touristic attraction too, oh! and also they are tourist guides. The roots of the beefeaters expression is uncertain, but the strongest theory is that on the 1800,s the Queen used to pay their salary in pieces of meat. There's one guard in particular, he is called The Ravenmaster, and whose job is to keep the ravens of the tower healthy and well fed, this task is very important because there's the belief that if all the ravens from the Tower of London die the crown and the whole Britain will fall with them (King Charles II established the number of ravens, always be 6 and a seventh on reserve)  so its crucial to keep these beautiful animals happy. Another practice they do to keep them from flying away is to cut the tips of their wings, they claim it's painless to the animals.

Durante los bombardeos de la segunda guerra mundial casi desaparecen todos los cuervos, solo uno sobrevivió, así que inmediatamente el mismísimo Sir Winston Churchill mandó traer mas cuervos para completar el número correcto (supongo que no quiso comprobar si la leyenda es cierta)
Por cierto que a los cuervos como a los guardias, también los pueden dar de baja deshonrosa por mala conducta y son reemplazados por otro con buenos modales.

During the World War II the ravens nearly disappeared, only one survived from the bombarding, but Sir Winston Churchill immediately ordered to bring more ravens to complete the correct number ( I suppose he didn't want to risk it and find out if the leyend is true) By the way, the ravens just like the guards can be dishonorable discharged for misbehavior.

Una buena recomendación es que a La Torre de Londres hay que ir armado de muchísima paciencia, ya que es un lugar extremadamente famoso y siempre hay mucha gente.

If you visit the Tower is very important to keep in mind that just like any other popular touristic site is always crowded, so you have to be very patient
